John is a graduate of Miami University and retired as a Navy public affairs officer and commanding officer of reserve units. His career in public relations, based mostly in California, spanned 40 years before giving way to several volunteer roles, including those with OCTA.
John produced the documentary film, Forgotten Journey,--the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Saga, the story of the first wagon party over the Sierra, broadcast on public television in 2001. It is still in distribution through museums and trail centers.
He is a 52-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a member of the District Hall of Fame, and a Past Society board member. John facilitates western and local history classes for the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute (OLLI) at Yavapai College in Prescott, is a member of The Westerners, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Arizona Historical Society.
On behalf of OCTA, John served several years as public relations committee chairman, co-produced the OCTA film, Saving a Legacy, and is involved in the marketing of the OCTA film, In Pursuit of a Dream. He organized the 2009 symposium in Yuma which set the standard for subsequent OCTA regional symposia. John served two terms on the OCTA board.
