Duane received a BS of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kansas and owned my own pharmacy for twenty-five years, retiring in 2006. Duane spent 28 years with the US Army, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2006.

Since retiring in 2006, Duane moved from Blue Rapids, KS to Holton, KS.

Duane's ancestors pioneered in Kansas in the early 1860's and did not go any further. Duane's activities with the trails began in earnest when he became involved with Alcove Spring. He has worked since 1993, since the Association formed a trust to own the park, making it available to the public, developing interpretive plans, opening trails, writing a newsletter and all the other parts of making a park work.

Duane joined OCTA in the early 1990's, and became active nationally when he retired. He has served one term on the Board of Directors from 2006 through 2009. He was re-elected to the Board, but resigned when he was elected Vice-President.
